Core Web Vitals in 2026: What Still Matters

Interaction to Next Paint (INP) replaced First Input Delay as a Core Web Vital in March 2024. Two years on, most sites have stopped panicking about it, and a lot of them are still failing it without knowing why.

The three numbers, and the thresholds that count

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): good at 2.5 seconds or less.
  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint): good at 200 milliseconds or less.
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): good at 0.1 or less.

Google judges these on real-user field data at the 75th percentile, not on the lab score you see in a single Lighthouse run. A perfect lab score with a failing field report is still a failing page.

Where the time actually goes

On the sites we audit, LCP problems are rarely the server. They are usually a hero image that is lazy-loaded when it should not be, a web font that blocks the headline, or a slider script that has to run before anything is painted. Fix the first thing on the screen before touching anything else.

INP failures almost always come from JavaScript: tag managers loading a dozen third-party scripts, chat widgets, and page builders that attach heavy handlers to every button. The fix is less code on the main thread, not a faster host.

Core Web Vitals are a tie-breaker, not a ranking strategy. But they are also a conversion problem, and that one costs money every day.

How much it matters for rankings

Page experience is a light signal. A slow page with the best answer will still outrank a fast page with a thin one. Where it matters is in close SERPs, where several pages are roughly equal on relevance and links — and in conversion rate, which is where slow pages quietly lose revenue.

What we check first

Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report, grouped by template rather than by URL. One broken template can fail thousands of pages, and one fix can pass them all.
