Why Your SEO Retainer Should Have a Benchmark Clause

If nobody wrote down where you started, nobody can prove where you got to.

Why Your SEO Retainer Should Have a Benchmark Clause

Most SEO contracts describe activity: so many links, so many articles, a monthly report. Very few write down where the site stood on day one. Without that, six months later nobody can say whether the money worked.

What a benchmark clause records

  • The agreed keyword set, and each keyword’s position on the start date.
  • Organic sessions and conversions for the previous three months, from your own analytics.
  • Which tools and which settings will be used to measure — the same ones at the end as at the start.
  • The date of the snapshot, exported and shared with both sides.

Why it protects both sides

For the client, it turns “we are seeing good momentum” into a number that either moved or did not. For the agency, it stops the goalposts moving: a seasonal dip or a site redesign the agency did not run is visible in the record.

A guarantee is only as good as the baseline it is measured against.

How we use it

Our 40% performance guarantee only works because of this clause. Before any money changes hands we record the baseline together, agree the measurement method, and write the target into the contract. If we have not beaten it within the agreed period, we keep working at no cost until we do.

Questions to ask any agency

Where will you record our starting point? Which tool measures it? What happens if the number does not move? If the answers are vague, the reporting will be too.
