How to Spot a Fake DR Before You Pay for a Link

Domain Rating is a third-party score of a site’s backlink profile. It is useful, and it is also easy to inflate. A site can show DR 70 and still pass almost nothing to you. Before paying for a placement, run these five checks.

1. Is there real organic traffic?

Open the site in Ahrefs or Semrush and look at the organic traffic graph for the last twelve months. High DR with near-zero traffic, or a cliff after a Google update, is the single clearest warning sign.

2. Where is the traffic coming from?

A “UK news site” with most of its traffic from countries it never writes about is usually ranking for junk keywords. Check the top keywords too: are they relevant to the site’s topic, or random?

3. What do its own backlinks look like?

Scan the referring domains. If most of them are other link-selling sites, spammy anchors or a sudden spike of links in one month, the DR was built, not earned.

4. How many outbound links does it sell?

Look at the last twenty posts. If nearly every one is a guest post with a commercial link, the site is a link farm with a blog template, and search engines tend to discount it.

5. Is it indexed and ranking?

Search site:domain.com and a few of its post titles. Pages that are not indexed cannot pass anything.

DR tells you what the backlink profile looks like. Traffic tells you whether anyone — including Google — trusts it.

Why we publish traffic next to DR

Every site in our marketplace lists DR and traffic side by side for exactly this reason. If a number flatters us less, it is still on the page.
